Biodiversity

Caring for Nature in East Wittering & Bracklesham

Why Biodiversity Matters to Our Community

Biodiversity simply means the variety of life around us—from wildflowers and trees to birds, insects, and even the soil beneath our feet. It exists everywhere: in our gardens, along our verges, on the beach, and in our open spaces.

But biodiversity is more than just “nature”—it is essential to our everyday lives.

Healthy natural environments provide:

  • Clean air and water
  • Food through pollination of crops
  • Protection from flooding and climate change
  • Spaces for relaxation, wellbeing, and recreation

Put simply: when nature thrives, so do we.

A National and Local Challenge

Across the UK, wildlife is declining at an alarming rate. Over half of species have declined in recent decades, and many are at risk of disappearing entirely.

This isn’t just a global issue—it affects places like East Wittering and Bracklesham too:

  • Loss of wildflower meadows
  • Reduction in pollinators such as bees and butterflies
  • Habitat fragmentation from development

Even small changes—like paving over gardens or cutting grass too frequently—can reduce the space available for wildlife.

Why It Matters Here

Our parish is uniquely placed between coast and countryside, giving us an important role in protecting local habitats.

Biodiversity helps to:

  • Support coastal and marine ecosystems
  • Maintain healthy green spaces for residents
  • Enhance the beauty and character of our village
  • Support tourism and local wellbeing

Nature is part of what makes East Wittering and Bracklesham such a special place to live.

What the Parish Council Is Doing

As part of our commitment under the Environment Act, the Parish Council is working to protect and enhance biodiversity across our area.

This includes:

  • Managing green spaces in a more wildlife-friendly way
  • Supporting biodiversity through planning decisions
  • Creating habitats such as wildflower areas and tree planting
  • Working with local groups, schools, and residents

We are also carrying out a biodiversity audit to better understand and improve our natural spaces.

 What You Can Do

Everyone can make a difference—no matter how small your space.

In your garden:

  • Plant wildflowers and native species
  • Avoid pesticides where possible
  • Leave areas slightly “wild”
  • Add bird boxes or insect hotels

In the community:

  • Join local planting or volunteering events
  • Take part in wildlife surveys or “BioBlitz” days
  • Help care for local green spaces

Even small actions can have a big impact. For example, gardens across the UK collectively form a huge area for wildlife—but many are being lost to paving and artificial surfaces.

Working Together for Nature

Protecting biodiversity is something we can only achieve together.

Government guidance highlights that raising awareness and involving communities is key to improving biodiversity locally.

By working as a community, we can:

  • Create connected habitats for wildlife
  • Improve the health and resilience of our environment
  • Leave a positive legacy for future generations

A Shared Responsibility

Biodiversity is not just about protecting rare species—it’s about protecting the systems that support all life, including our own.

As Sir David Attenborough has said:

“It is the range of biodiversity that we must care for”

Together, we can ensure East Wittering and Bracklesham remains a thriving, vibrant place for both people and nature.
